VAS DevOps Engineer
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, IT, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Telecom IT.
- Strong understanding of VAS platforms, Messaging, USSD, SDP, and GSM environments.
- Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration technologies.
Role Purpose:
Sunshine Power and Telecom is seeking a VAS DevOps Engineer responsible for the design, deployment, operation, and continuous optimization of mission-critical Value Added Services (VAS) platforms in a cloud-native environment.
The role supports GSM, MPESA, and VAS services, including Messaging, USSD, Content, Voice (RBT, IVR), Video, IoT, and emerging digital platforms. The position operates under strict SLA and availability requirements, contributing to improved delivery efficiency and platform reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, deploy, and operate cloud-native VAS platforms using containerization and Kubernetes.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated, reliable, and high-quality releases.
- Evolve platform architecture toward microservices, scalability, and resilience.
- Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability to reduce MTTR.
- Provide L2/L3 production support for VAS, GSM, and MPESA platforms, including after-hours support when required.
- Manage infrastructure lifecycle, configuration, and automation.
- Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and business stakeholders on solution design and delivery.
Technical Skills:
- Platforms & DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins / ArgoCD, Linux
- Integration: REST APIs, Microservices, SMPP, USSD, SDP
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Oracle (working knowledge)
- Networking & Protocols: TCP/IP, GSM MAP, SMPP, SIP, DIAMETER, SS7
- Scripting & Automation: Shell scripting, Java / JavaScript (working knowledge)

VAS Full-Stack Developer
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 3–5 years of software development experience.
- 3+ years hands‑on experience in telecom VAS, messaging, or digital services platforms.
Role Summary:
Sunshine Power and Telecom is looking for a VAS Full-Stack Developer to design, develop, and deliver mission-critical VAS applications supporting Safaricom’s digital services ecosystem.
The role focuses on building scalable backend services, service orchestration logic, and secure user and partner portals, with deep integration into GSM core systems, MPESA, messaging gateways, and VAS service delivery platforms.
The position supports VAS domains including Messaging, USSD, Content Delivery, Voice (RBT, IVR, Media Exchange), Video, OTA, IoT, Device Management, and emerging digital platforms under strict availability, performance, and SLA requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop end-to-end VAS applications (SMS, USSD, IVR, Flash SMS, digital content services).
- Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Java (Spring Boot) or equivalent frameworks.
- Implement service orchestration logic including retries, throttling, failover, charging triggers, and subscription lifecycle management.
- Develop internal admin portals and dashboards for configuration, monitoring, reporting, and revenue tracking with secure role‑based access.
- Integrate with telecom platforms and protocols (SMPP, USSD, SS7, DIAMETER, SIP, OCS/IN, SMSC, MPESA, partner APIs).
- Design and manage databases for subscriptions, usage, charging events, and CDRs with full auditability.
- Apply secure coding standards, validation, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance.
- Support production deployments, service launches, incident analysis, and root‑cause resolution.
- Collaborate with NOC, CVM, commercial, regulatory, and partner teams.
Required Technical Skills:
- Backend & APIs: Java (Spring Boot), Node.js, RESTful APIs, asynchronous processing
- Frontend: JavaScript / TypeScript, React, Angular, or similar frameworks
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Redis / Dragonfly (working knowledge)
- Messaging & Integration: SMPP, USSD, Kafka, RabbitMQ
- Architecture: Microservices, high‑TPS, low‑latency telecom systems
- Telecom Domain: VAS platforms, charging, subscription and service lifecycle management
Soft Skills:
- Strong ownership of revenue‑impacting services
